Episode 2: The Sub That Wasn’t a Sandwich
South Street is loud tonight. Neon reflections spill into the puddles, and every third passerby hums the same tune, though none of them know the words. If you pause long enough at the corner of 5th, you’ll hear it too — a deep vibration beneath the sidewalk, like a SEPTA train tunneling just out of schedule.
Except no train is coming.
Rumors spread last season of a cheesesteak so heavy it collapsed its own roll, leaving only the filling behind, dripping into the cracks of the pavement. Locals called it The Sub That Wasn’t a Sandwich — not a hoagie, not a steak, not even food. Just an echo. Some say you can still hear the crunch of onions when you lean close to the manhole covers at night. Others insist the echo isn’t onions at all, but voices, bargaining.
Philly Bob doesn’t deny it. He shrugs when asked. “Every city has its myths,” he says. “Ours come with provolone.”
But tonight the myth thickens. Reports come in from tourists (always the tourists first) who swear they saw the Sub roll down 9th Street by itself. No wrapper. No hands. No bite taken. Just a sandwich-shaped shadow, glistening with cheese, moving against the wind.
Back at the grill, the staff keeps cooking, pretending not to notice the hum growing louder beneath their sneakers. The pigeons perched on the roof have stopped filing paperwork. Even they know something’s wrong.
The city seems to lean closer.
Will the Sub That Wasn’t a Sandwich return? Or was it never gone at all?
Stay tuned.
