Episode 8: The Mayors Convene
The air was thick with steam and sizzling grease, and the walls of the shop seemed to lean closer, as though the very bricks wanted in on the secret. At the center table sat four mayors. Not officially recognized by the Commonwealth, mind you — these were mayors of the mythic register, of the kind only Philly Bob’s could produce.
One wore a hat that changed shape depending on who was looking at it. Another signed papers with a pen that had no ink but somehow left marks anyway. The third spoke only in riddles about bus schedules. And the fourth — the largest, most colorful, and suspiciously mascot-shaped of them all — shook with a laughter that rattled the ketchup bottles.
The subject? The city’s newest problem: tourists who asked for “Philly cheesesteak sandwiches.” The phrase made the meat sizzle uneasily, and onions wept onto the grill in protest. The mayors leaned in, voices colliding like trolleys on the wrong track.
“You can’t legislate authenticity,” muttered Hat Mayor.
“But you can price it,” boomed Pen Mayor.
“Or confuse it,” offered Bus-Schedule Mayor.
And the fourth mayor leaned back, belly shaking, declaring, “Go Birds!” — which resolved the matter instantly.
Bob, at the grill, didn’t interrupt. He just flipped another steak, grease sparking like fireworks against the hood vent. Destiny had already been decided: no matter what the tourists ordered, they’d be served truth — hot, messy, and dripping through the wax paper like divine ordinance.
The meeting of the mayors concluded without a signature, without a law, but with the quiet consensus that Philly Bob’s had never needed permission. It was already the court, the city council, and the parade rolled into one.
Next week, the saga continues.
